Finding your perfect fit
Most Rachel Sañado pieces are one size, held in place by a discreet hat elastic, a comb or a headband. Our wide-brim hats are made in size 57 (57 cm) unless otherwise specified. How a piece sits also depends on your head size, your hairstyle and how you like to wear it, so take two minutes with this guide before your event.
If you are unsure about anything, email Rachel before ordering. She is happy to help.
How to measure your head
You need a soft tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler.
- Wrap the tape around your head about 2–3 cm above your ears, across the middle of your forehead and around the back. This is the standard hat-sizing line.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight.
- Note the measurement in centimetres.
- If you wear thick, curly or voluminous hair down, add 1–2 cm.
- If you usually wear a headband, measure with it on.
- If you fall between measurements, size up for comfort.
What your measurement means
| Piece | Size | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fascinators, pillboxes, crowns, headbands | One size | The elastic, comb or headband adapts to most head sizes. Email Rachel if you have very fine or short hair, or plan a high-volume hairstyle. |
| Wide-brim hats | 57 cm | Compare with your measurement. If yours is different or you are unsure, email Rachel before ordering. |
The elastic should feel like light, even pressure, not a squeeze. If you are between sizes, need extra elastic or want a comb moved, Rachel can often adjust it.
How each style is worn
| Style | How it stays on | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Saucer fascinator | Hat elastic and comb | Angled to one side; the elastic sits behind your head, under your hair |
| Pillbox hat | Hat elastic | Tilted forward or to the side; elastic behind your head, under your hair |
| Disc and percher fascinators | Headband | Angled to one side, slightly forward |
| Sculptural fascinators | Headband, or elastic and comb | Off-centre, so the line frames your face |
| Crowns and headbands | Headband | Across the crown of your head |
| Wide-brim hats and boaters | Fitted to size; combs on many styles | Level or tilted slightly forward, sitting just above your eyebrows |
Each product page lists exactly how that piece is secured.
Hair and keeping it secure all day
Your hairstyle changes how a piece sits, so plan it with your outfit.
- Low styles work best. A low bun, ponytail or loose braid at the nape gives combs something to grip and keeps wide brims low and steady.
- Avoid high buns and top knots under hats. They lift the hat off its resting point.
- Anchor the comb first. Slide it into your hair before heading outdoors, then settle the elastic under your hair at the back.
- Fine or short hair: combs need a little hair to grip. Ask Rachel which styles suit you best.
- Windy days: add a decorative hat pin through the band, or choose a style with a chin ribbon where offered.
- Too loose? A hat sitting high catches more wind. Contact Rachel, as small adjustments can often be made.
- Finish your hair first. Apply hairspray and perfume before putting your piece on.
Care, storage and fit advice
- Store your piece supported in its hat box, away from sunlight, heat, humidity and pressure from other items.
- Handle it by the base, crown or headband, never by beads, flowers or sculptural details.
- Keep it dry. Wipe crystals, mirrors or metallic details only with a soft, dry cloth.
- Organza flowers can be refreshed with a light steam.
Email Rachel before ordering if:
- you are between sizes or outside the usual range
- you plan a high-volume hairstyle under your piece
- you need extra elastic or a comb repositioned
